Believe it or not, when you think about Fear and Failure around your life and business, BOTH in the right circumstance are really good things. Sound crazy? Consider this:
- Fear when facing a large wild animal? GOOD
- Fear when trying a new process to improve? NOT GOOD
- Failure in forgetting your wedding anniversary? REALLY NOT GOOD
- Failure in a new technique of finding new prospects? GOOD
Wait, what? Fear when trying something new is completely natural, yet can lead to procrastination and mental paralysis. A recent article said that fear and worry is wasted 93% of the time over things that never happen.
Failure, and in particular the fear of failure, is what can really hurt your progress in life and in business.
Now am I saying we should do everything we can to fail? Of course not. But I am saying that failure and under-performance is bound to happen from time to time. In fact, I would say it this way:
“If you are not failing often, then you are not pushing yourself hard enough.”
Learning to fail forward and fail quickly is the key. If you really want to grow your business (and your life for that matter) you have to step out of your comfort zone and try new and different things. That makes failure inevitable—but it does not have to be fatal.
The uber-successful are known for failing forward. People like Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, and Elon Musk are all know for failures, but more so incredible successes. Why? They learned how to learn from their failures.
Now, I don’t like to fail. In fact, I hate it. But as I have grown as a person and as a successful sales professional and now a coach, I realize that learning how to learn from failures is a great way to find success quicker.
Many people—and you might be one—allow failure to break them and take them to a place of mental defeat. But I believe that learning from failure allows you to pivot quickly, tweak the plan, and find success in a faster way.
That is all about finding a better way! And you know me, my WHY is to find a better way and share it.
So, I want to encourage you that whatever you are afraid of starting, or whatever it is that you are frustrated by today, or whatever is keeping you from trying a new method—JUST GET STARTED. Failing is okay. It is your response to failing that is the most important.
Remember - “If you are not failing often, then you are not pushing yourself hard enough.”
